The "Yes, AND" Energy Solution
Feb 28, 2022
WELCOME TO EPISODE 113
The mind plays a large role in illness. In improvisational comedy, there is a rule of thumb called “Yes, and…” or simply the acceptance principle. The premise is simple: accept a statement as the truth (yes), then expand on that way of thinking (and). With that, it encourages cooperation and effective communication. So, what does this have to do with illness? Well, a diagnosis is a hard pill to swallow. Yet, acknowledging the facts first is one step towards acceptance. Adopting this “Yes, and…” energy in life brings hope and endless possibilities. After all, there’s more to life beyond the diagnosis.

Welcome to the Beautifully Broken Podcast. I'm your host, Freddie Kimmel, and on this show we explore the survivor's journey. Practitioners making a difference and the therapeutic treatments and transformational technology that allow the body to heal itself. Witness the inspiration we gain by navigating the human experience with grace, humility, and a healthy dose of mistakes. Because part of being human is being beautifully broken.
Freddie Kimmel (00:34.031)
Here we go, we're going to start this one off with a bang. All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances. This Shakespearean quote rings true. It resonates with me even more as time passes. I think when I talk about health, we can think about this theatrical modeling to life or the ability of great storytelling to mirror life.
I would also intuit we can use and apply the first rule of improvisation to our life. And that is bringing the yes and energy to your daily operational manual. Yes and energy or yes and thinking is a rule of thumb in improvisation. Specifically, improvisational comedy that suggests that a participant should accept what another participant has stated yes and then expand on that line of thinking.
It's also used in businesses and organizations as a principle that improves the effectiveness of brainstorming. It fosters effective communication. It encourages free sharing of ideas, active listening without pulling out or blanketing the creative spark. This popular quote, the yes and, it keeps the story going. It builds an epic plot. It's powerful. It creates hope and an endless realm of possibilities. Endless.
And I want to bring this tip, this energetic tool, which I have gained so much ground working with, with my medical professionals. I want to share it. Even though it's not trained in functional medicine, because let's face it, sometimes you're with a gastroenterologist who knows his area of expertise. And that is what he's studied. And that is what he's trained in. The gut. Now you cannot fault the man for not knowing the role of black mold interrupting the electron transport chain.
or its hydrophilic nature to cross the blood brain barrier, which will slow transit times of food and allow for co-infections in the bilinary track and also very possibly be a co-factor in your bleeding, colon and depression. And the list goes on and on, right? So our segmented model for healthcare is often a symptom management. Let's be real, in truth, and there's no judgment, it's more or less disease management. Seldom does a doctor, I guess I'd say 99%,
Freddie Kimmel (02:58.821)
for you, are they going to do an hour long systems approach analysis of lifestyle, environmental co-factors, your mental, emotional wellbeing to health to bring you back into balance? And so you can be mad as hell and you can be angry. I think I would, I would spend some time there and you can spend lots of time hating the game or we can use the five minute rule. You can use your five minute to pound on the ground and demand a different life. And then you can be
solution base and in my experience immediately find movement and improvement and a reduction in symptoms based on what you already have going for you. So when I bring yes and to my medical doctor's office, it's shocking how the power dynamic can shift. I think one of the most frustrating reflex responses to someone when they're challenged, when people automatically launch into this story of telling me why it's hard, why it's too expensive.
why why those who have failed before, or it might not be legitimate, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,
As a wise friend of mine once said to a specialist struggling with a very difficult diagnosis, so you don't know what caused this? He answered no. And the patient replied, so how do you know there's no cure for it then? It's basic two dimensional physics, which tells us something can go one way, it can go the other. My question is for the general population, if drugs and surgery do heal,
Why are we not all thriving in the United States? Let's just look at the United States. Make no mistake, we excel at keeping people alive, but with an all-time high rate of suicide and spending money towards managing chronic conditions, we are failing miserably. There were nearly two and a half times as many suicides over 47,000 in the United States as there were homicides, 19,000. As per NH statistics.
Freddie Kimmel (05:17.138)
double the amount of people killing themselves as we're being killed. I'm not trying to make light of a stat or use it as a PowerPoint and they're not numbers. The 47,511 people in 2019 are sons, they're daughters, they're someone's dear lover, but I think it's important to know the total age-adjusted suicide rate in the United States has increased 35.2 % in 20 years, just 20 years.
I have the blessed opportunity of knowing so many medical professionals. They're my friends. They're the frontline workers. They're tired. They're exhausted. They're heartbroken. They bear witness to a system that is so dysfunctional. They see 3 % of a conservative figure of the United States population is living with an autoimmune condition or on an immune modifying drug, managing a disease with no continued education on the why.
It's simply a pill to manage the ill. There's no empowerment piece. There's no plans for an off ramp. So what does the future hold for that person? And just so you know, the 3 % of the US population living on an immune modification drug is 10 million. That's conservative. That's diagnosed. So when you wonder why our country had such unique expression of people dying from the pandemic, there's your number. Why haven't we had that conversation?
Managing a bleeding colon with medication to shut down the immune system in the middle of a pandemic to me seems criminal. When the science says dietary modification, fasting, natural herbal formulations, stress management and lifestyle change your life exponentially better than the pharmaceutical intervention. But you know what? It's hard. It's really hard. It takes mental, emotional and financial investment. It takes radical ownership of imbalance and disease states.
on the shoulders of the patient or the person who is ill. That's the person who has to own it. Unless you want to wait for the cultural paradigm shift in healthcare. No? All right, I'll keep going. So in 2019, was an incredible study from the Proceedings of Natural Academy of Science, and they found that positive thinking can result in 11 to 15 % longer lifespan and a stronger likelihood to live past 85.
Freddie Kimmel (07:43.464)
This effect remained after other factors such as age, gender, income, depression, and health status were all controlled. So what I want to show you on this episode, right here, 15 minutes, that's it. This whole thing will be 15, I hope. I'd like to show you how to do this with micro-corrections in perception. Quick tips for yes and energy. Number one, become the expert.
Study your condition, study your disease, then double that time that you spent on the label or the condition and apply it to the basic principles which allow the body to remain in robust health. Water, sleep, grounding, light, nutrition, spiritual connection, mental and emotional balance. Know you're in balance. Yes, and know the bridge to vibrant health is a better way of being. Energy flows where focus goes.
I think I got that right. Number two, don't stop seeking the right provider for you. If you are stuck with a doctor or a coach that you do not love, which may be restricted financially, energetically, or geographically, I understand. Yes. Yes, I don't love my practitioner. And keep a record of the data that you've done, the biomarkers that you have, and create a veritable case file of what I know so when you can...
Yes, we can when we can consult with someone that is a better fit. It is not a complete reboot from square one. I want to add a B to B. There are so many wonderful practitioners who have published books, free webinars that you can access. I think you'll find most of the information is exactly the same as when you pay for the very expensive console. It's the same. It's simply the holding space like a badass for you that is going to assist in your recovery. Number three, speak.
to your provider about your emotional health. The body keeps the score. You have physical symptoms. Yes. And the mind plays a large role in illness that we are just starting to comprehend. The body keeps the score is a great book to start with. Number four, your roles may change as a result of living with chronic illness. The normal, what you have done in the past is nothing to base progress on. Writing a happy mismeter
Freddie Kimmel (10:09.669)
on the day-to-day fluctuations in health and symptomology could be a path to darkness. I have done that ride. Practice kindness to the physical and emotional body. Things will change, right? Roles will change with living with chronic illness. This is where I'm at. And how can I make these adjustments with kindness, love, and empathy towards my body? Number five, define your circle of support.
know who you can count on in your community. This can be a very literal list or a vision board of who you'd like to call in. We can go with scenario A. Yes, Freddie, I feel supported. And you know what? Here's where I could use help. Let me give you a Freddie example. I feel very supported energetically, nutritionally. I've got all the biohacks in the world. And structurally, structurally, because my body had been in chronic illness for 20 years with metastatic cancer, Lyme and mold,
I think there is some structural help I could use in the form of an integrative physical therapist. So I'm kind of looking for that right now. That's what I'm calling in. So where I'm at and where I want to go. Or scenario two, yes, I don't feel supported. And here is the person I imagine coming into my life to be that pillar, right? Often when we're clear with the universe, it responds with equal clarity.
So build that list. Either way. Yes, I'm supported and or no, I'm not supported and here's who I'd like it to be. Number six, acknowledge that chronic illness may be or may present limitations and challenges, right? There is a literal shift in what life will feel like. And part of that shift could be a down regulation in energy. could be less travel. It could be less physical activity. The body is down regulating.
Could it be doing it for my benefit? What if I leaned into what is? What does this stillness feel like? What does it feel like to be alone? Is there beauty in that? Explore that platform. Explore that. Don't just want to run from it. And that's my advice on that one. Number seven, identify what is important to you and gives you meaning in your life. Probably the biggest one I have on here. The why is so powerful. Is a clear driver to direction. Why do you need to be well?
Freddie Kimmel (12:36.235)
What would you do without Lyme or cancer or chronic illness? Identify that why. Number eight, mindfulness is often recommended as a way to manage stress. Imagine and build a list, taking stock in what you have right now. Be mindful of what is the good things. It's vital for your spirit to find a way to have joy and goals, even small ones. Smelling a cup of coffee, maybe you can't drink it.
getting up and getting a hot shower, maybe it's assisted, whatever it is, right? Mindfulness is important. And I promise you, until you've been dealt with a possible terminal illness, you have no idea how many things we have to be grateful for. I'll give the example of my grandmother who passed away from glioblastoma, cancer, when I was a junior in high school. And I remember her saying one time, I remember, I think we were joking about my brother smoking pot or doing marijuana.
And I just remember my grandma's like, wow, I would never do that. I would never do that. I wouldn't waste one breath on bringing in smoke into my lungs and my brain if I knew what I knew now. And I knew that the value of the brain and each individual day. And it was, I remember her saying that sentence. I remember her in a wheelchair. I remember where she sat. I was like, ah, that's just grandma being grandma. And I feel into it now. And I'm like, oh, I feel that all the time. I feel that all the time.
I feel that all the time. I watch people be able to go out and party and have a bunch of beers and just be wild and get up the next day just go to work. Wow. I can't do that. I'm not saying that's going to add more joy to my life, but I look at it, was like, wow, life has really changed. But I can for sure be mindful in what I do have. There was a time when I was down to eight foods, like lettuce and chicken. Now I can eat a taco.
in Austin, right? There's so much I can do. There's so much I can do and be grateful for. The last one I just want to say is movement is life. And here we are at 15 minutes. Movement is life. Movement makes energy. The movement of fascia around the muscle belly creates piezoelectricity. Right? The walking motion of our legs moving through space is a figure eight massage, a swivel, if you will imagine the hips moving from right to left leg, the massages, the small intestines.
Freddie Kimmel (14:57.377)
in the peritoneum cavity, right? Movement helps us heal. Movement helps us grow. So even though your movement may be compromised, don't let the narrative be, because I'm ill, I need to be still. I need to shy away from exercise. There's going to be a great podcast that I'm doing with ARX, Adaptive Response Resistance Training. ARX, they're based in Austin, and it is a technology.
that allows me to move a lot of weight in a short amount of time within a very, very safe way. And what I've noticed is, as my muscles grow, as I get more dense, I have more mitochondrial energy. I have more battery. And so that's something I always told myself. The narrative was, I'm not ready to lift heavy things. It's not safe. It's not good for me. My joints are too weak from Lyme disease, they're too brittle. I was telling myself that story and finally I found because
I called it in a way to do that. So I just want to say in closing, yes, I hear you. And yes, I take that information and here's what I'd like to do with it. Yes, I hear what you're telling me, what my blood work looks like, what my tumor markers are. And here's where we're going to go with that. This is the Beautifully Broken Podcast. I love you so much and I'll see you in the next episode. Big love from Freddie. Bye.
