 EPISODE TRANSCRIPT

Freddie Kimmel (00:00.942)
Welcome to the Beautifully Broken podcast. I'm your host, Freddie Kimmel, and on the show, we explore the survivor's journey, practitioners making a difference, and the therapeutic treatments and transformational technology that allow the body to heal itself. Witness the inspiration we gain by navigating the human experience with grace, humility, and a healthy dose of mistakes. Because part of being human is being beautifully broken.

Freddie Kimmel (00:35.149)
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the beautifully broken podcast. I was on a stage a few weeks ago in Austin, Texas with a panel of survivors. I was up there with a guest that's coming in a couple of weeks, Maggie Jones, and we had both said at different times, cancer is the best thing that ever happened to me. Sounds like a claim, doesn't it? There are definitely instances in which individuals might express these sentiments.

And I want to say before we go forward, it's important to understand that statement is rooted in my personal experience and my individual perspective. And there are reasons why someone might come to that belief system. I am a believer, just like in the Princess Bride, that life is pain. Anybody that tells you something different is selling you something.

And that has been my experience, my lived experience. watch people go through hardship to be on the planet. I understand to be in some degree of adversity, hardship at times. It can feel like suffering, although we could argue suffering is a choice when we don't accept the reality of what is. And this is something that has evolved for me over time, how I see the world, how I see disease.

recently heard someone reflecting on being under the umbrella of 20 years of toxic masculinity and theorizing that without Lyme disease, without chronic illness, without being bedridden, he never would have cracked that shell, never would have talked about his feelings, asked for help, be humbled beyond belief. And that has been my experience. Some of the greatest moments of transformation for me

have been in a hospital bed, been on the floor, have been crying. Now, do we need to learn our lessons this way? Not always, but it does happen. And so for myself and Maggie, in our personal stories, cancer has been one of the best things that has ever happened to me. And I just wanted to walk through what that means and unpack it. So if you find that statement activating, let me make a case.

Freddie Kimmel (02:59.427)
Number one, for me, cancer was unparalleled personal growth and perspective shift. So many times facing a life threatening illness like cancer can lead individuals to reevaluating their priorities, gaining a new perspective in life, maybe appreciating things you might've taken for granted. Maybe that was walking unassisted down the street, gazing up at the summer sun. Maybe it was sipping a cup of coffee.

There were many times in my treatment where I wasn't eating, where I was 12 days on a feeding tube, where I was in a hospital bed and could barely walk because my whole stomach was cut open. And I remember watching people come in and out of my room sipping on coffee. And it's not that I missed coffee per se at that time in my life. was that, how did I take that for granted?

that smooth burnt black liquid rushing over your tongue and then the subsequent boost of caffeine. my God, did I miss it? I remember when I was trying to find something on the TV to watch to take my focus away from the pain I was feeling. Everybody loves Raymond would come on. And if you've ever watched that show, which I didn't watch the show at the time, everybody was always going into the kitchen and having conversations in the kitchen, eating ice cream.

pouring these cool glasses of milk and I was imagining what it would be like to have that cool milk run across my lips. And I remember, I remember having my mom push me down to the lobby in the hospital and I got her to wheelchair me to the cafeteria. And I was like, can I just get close to the food to smell it? And then I had her roll me up to a vending machine and I put my hand on the glass.

This is so sad. I just wanted to be close to the soft drinks. I was like, remember what that tastes like, the bubbles. Not that I drink soft drinks today, but at the time I was just like the memory of it. was so profound. It was one of those moments where you realized unless those things were taken away, what a wonderful thing about being human, eating, drinking fluids. So that was a profound shift in my perspective. So

Freddie Kimmel (05:26.019)
Those things I will never take for granted. Another thing that cancer did for me and why it's the best thing that ever happened to me was it strengthened my relationships. You know, oftentimes when we go through a difficult experience like cancer, brings people close together. I was in a hospital bed for 12 days, single bed in the room. I had tubes down my throat. It was called an NG tube down my nose to suck out the stomach acid because it wasn't collecting in my stomach.

I was in incredible pain, incredible pain. I had constant pain medication running through the back of my spine. And when that epidural would fail, I would be in excruciating, wailing pain. My mom slept in a chair in that room for 12 days. Every time I looked over, I was like, how is she sleeping in a chair? But you see what they mean by a mother's love. She was not going anywhere.

that always struck me in the moment when my mom leaned over and said, you know, I'd love to trade places with you. And she meant it. And you understand what true love is. As a young man, the selfishness and the self-centeredness that I had sometimes held was greatly diminished in that experience, in that lived experience. Another thing that changed from going through cancer was a deepening of my self-awareness and my purpose.

Cancer can often lead people to reassess their life's purpose or discover a new sense of meaning. People often become aware of their own mortality, prompting them to change their lives or pursue a new passion or focus on an activity that really brings them joy. For me at the time, when I was able to move back to New York City, I took the effort and the energy that was

holding me back in my head about wanting to be on Broadway or sing professionally and I just, I let it go. There was unleashed, unbridled passion coming from my body every time I would step into an audition room or up on the stage because I understood for the first time that there was nothing holding me back. There were no casting directors telling me, it's not your part. There were no agents who weren't calling me with enough auditions.

Freddie Kimmel (07:50.14)
I was in the game and that's all that mattered. I got to play the game. And until you're taken out and you're put on the bench with metastatic cancer, you don't understand that because you don't have the lived experience. That's it. You don't have the lived experience. The other thing that shifted profoundly for me was advocacy and inspiration around health.

Now, it took me a little time to get to a place where I identified as healed or feeling well. My first surgery was in 2006. My last one was in 2015. So I took that experience and that's why I do this podcast. That's why I have guests on like Maggie and Brad and the quiet epidemic and on and on and on.

Because I know, I know the human potential. I know how we can feel. I know what's in the body. I know the body's ability to recover from some real heavy shit. And I think from my understanding, we're aware of cancer. What we need is better research. You know, it's a fine line. We often walk on the blade of compliance and what we really want to say. But now, because science

is an evolving energy of new information, which science is never settled. Now we're starting to see research come across the table about ice baths helping people with cancer, converting unhealthy white adipose or white fat tissue to brown fat, is more mitochondrial dense than metabolic approach to cancer. We're looking at a 50 % decrease in metastatic cancer from exercise.

We're seeing new clinical trials beginning to be explored with pulsed electromagnetic field. We're looking at red light therapy, helping charge the skin before we go out in the sunlight. Amplifying the mitochondrial health in the cell protects us from sunburns. We're looking at the lymphatic system, which when it functions, this lymphatic system, which operates on the principles of fluid dynamics,

Freddie Kimmel (10:18.332)
not a pump like the circulatory system, allows all the beneficial immune cells to proliferate the organs and do their job because we fight cancer every day. Everybody has cancer cells every day. However, our immune system is winning the war. So I advocate, I advocate for more research. We're all aware of cancer. We don't need more cancer awareness. God bless you wherever you fall in, but that's where I'm falling in.

So I'm gonna close this and just say, it's very important to note that not everybody's experience with cancer is the same. I have some positive perspectives and these do not negate the challenges and the suffering that come with this disease. This is just how I am navigating my personal experience. But I hope this inspires you.

to know beyond the shadow of a doubt, there is always hope beyond what you see. And it's possible to not just survive, but to thrive, to lead a healthy life, to live a wonderful life. Life is 10 % of what happens to us and it's 90 % of how we respond. I love you so much. This is Freddie from the Beautifully Broken Podcast. Ladies and gentlemen, biologicalmedicine.org.
